The radically liberal Hollywood star Alec Baldwin has launched an attack on the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed on the set of the movie Rust back in 2021 when a gun he was holding went off.
Baldwin Attacks Hutchins’ Family
Last Thursday, Baldwin slammed Hutchins’ family as he requested that a wrongful death lawsuit that they filed against him be dismissed with prejudice.
“The loss of a daughter and sister is undoubtedly painful in any circumstance,” Baldwin’s attorneys wrote in court documents obtained by Fox News. “Yet Plaintiffs – who had been distanced from Halyna physically, financially, and emotionally for years before her death – have no viable cause of action against Defendants. This action is especially misguided.”
The lawyers went on to say that in the state of California, the plaintiff has to be married to the decedent to receive compensation for a wrongful death. They added that the Hutchins’ family could not prove a “sufficiently close relationship” with the cinematographer, which is necessary under New Mexico law.
Baldwin’s lawyers also asked for a stay of proceedings until the criminal trial against him is completed.
Hutchins’ Family’s Lawyer Fires Back
Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing Hutchins’ mother, father, and sister, fired back by blasting Baldwin for trying to “avoid responsibility” for the fatal shooting of the cinematographer.
“We are not surprised that Alec Baldwin is once again attempting to avoid responsibility for what he did,” Allred said. “It is abundantly clear under New Mexico law, which will be applied in the California court that he is responsible for all of the harm he did to the entirety of Halyna Hutchins’ family. We are here to make sure that he is held accountable for his actions.”
Hutchins was killed on October 21, 2021 during rehearsals on the set of Rust when a gun that Baldwin was holding went off as he practiced cross-drawing the revolver. The film’s director Joel Souza was also injured in the shooting, but he has since recovered from his injuries.
Hutchins’ Sister Speaks Out
Hutchins’ family filed their wrongful death lawsuit two months ago, claiming that Baldwin, producers of Rust and other defendants are responsible for the renowned cinematographer’s death.
“We are the sister and the mother of Halyna Hutchins. To lose my sister, at least personally for me, was a horrible experience,” Hutchins’ sister Svetlana Zemko said in a press conference. “And it is one of the biggest losses of my life. And even more devastating is to see the utter suffering of our parents and how their health has sharply declined.”
“It is for this reason that I would like those who are at fault, for somebody to carry that responsibility,” she continued. “And not just someone, but that very someone who is truly responsible for this. I believe to let this go and to leave this unpunished is unallowable.”
Baldwin Never Reached Out To Hutchins’ Family
Allred has claimed that Baldwin has never reached out to these family members.
“It’s clear to us that the relationships of all of our clients have been damaged and that they will not be able to enjoy life in the same way as they did when their precious Halyna was alive,” Allred said after the lawsuit was filed, according to The Guardian.
What happened to Hutchins was an absolute tragedy, and her family deserves all the compensation in the world for her death. In the end, Baldwin needs to be held accountable for what he did just like anyone else would be in his situation.
Just because Baldwin has long been a member of Hollywood’s liberal elite, it should not mean that he is above the law.
