Following Diego Sanchez’s clear cut loss at UFC 253, there’s been renewed debate about whether the legend should retire. But, the 38-year-old is reporting he fought Jake Matthews with a torn labrum.
Sanchez says he fought with a torn labrum
The former TUF winner took on the surging, 26-year-old welterweight at the recent event, and dropped a clear-cut, decision loss. Due to Sanchez’s age, and on account of all the wars he’s been in, the defeat spiked talk about whether the legend should retire.
But, more recently, Sanchez shared out this statement via Instagram.
Warriors don’t always win they do however always survive! I took a fight on the other side of the world on a months notice, fought my fourth primed 26 year old out of the last five opponents. With a torn labrum in my left hip!
I positively pressed the fight with a streaking 5-1 welterweight prospect. Had a face to face with @danawhite with not one negative word only respect and love. I might have some haters but that’s only a accurate identification of successfulness. Made it my 36 trip to the octagon.
Today I will get treatment on my torn labrum @utahstemcells @jon_anik was incorrect during fight commentary as he credited stem cell for helping me in between fights.
This is my first partnership with a stem cell facility and am very excited to see how this treatment can help extend my longevity.
Retirement doesn’t sound imminent
Based off these comments, it certainly doesn’t sound like Diego’s thinking about retiring in the short term future.
Officially, he’s 3-2 in his last 5 bouts. But in his last bout against Michel Pereira, the rugged vet appeared en route to a loss. Pereira tagged him with an illegal knee, however, and Pereira was disqualified.
So, in other words, Sanchez has not been ahead on scorecards in three straight bouts. Prior to those bouts, Sanchez recorded back-to-back wins over Craig White and Mickey Gall.
All that aside, it will be interesting to see who the the legend faces next.
