The first trailer for Alec Baldwin’s long-delayed movie Rust was released on Wednesday.
As our readers likely know, the movie was controversially completed following the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film’s set in October of 2021.
Rust Trailer Is Released
In the trailer of the Western movie, Baldwin, 67, can be seen playing the fictional outlaw Harland Rust. Set in Wyoming in the 1880s, the film is about Harland coming out of hiding to save his 13-year-old grandson (Patrick Scott McDermott) after the boy is sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a rancher.
Harland manages to rescue his grandson, and the two attempt to make a run to Mexico while being pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a wild bounty hunter known as “Preacher” (Travis Fimmel). Also appearing in Rust is the former Titanic star Francis Fisher and Jake Busey, the son of the Oscar-nominated actor Gary Busey.

Rust Shooting
“Rust is a heartfelt and emotional story forged in the struggles of the new frontier — a story of the ripples that a single violent act can send through generations and the hard-fought redemption to be found in a world where the line between good and evil can often be unclear,” Melina Spadone, a representative of Rust Movie Productions LLC, told People Magazine.
An ironic summary if we’ve ever seen one!
Spadone went on to point out the “beautiful cinematography of Halyna Hutchins,” who was sadly killed on the New Mexico movie set in 2021. Her death came after a gun that Baldwin was holding went off, killing her and injuring Rust director Joel Souza. Baldwin was later arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. However, these charges were eventually dropped.
Meanwhile, Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months behind bars.
Filming for Rust later controversially resumed in 2023. The cinematography was completed by Bianca Cline, who praised the work that Hutchins did on the movie last year.
“I’m in awe of how much people admired her and just how talented she is,” Cline said at the time. “I think that cinematographers sometimes get relegated to being seen as technicians, but I think that Halyna elevated it to an art.”

Baldwin And Souza Defend Completing Rust
In 2023, Baldwin took to Instagram to celebrate the final day of filming of Rust. Indeed, he described the completion of the movie as being a “miracle.”
“It’s been a long and difficult road. But we reach the end of the trail today,” Baldwin wrote. “Congratulations to Joel, Bianca and the entire cast and crew. Nothing less than a miracle.”
Souza has defended completing Rust. Back in November, he explained that he felt it was important to finish the film to “honor” Hutchins.
“There are people out there who have very strong feelings that we shouldn’t have done it [finished Rust],” Souza told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m not going to try to change their minds. Just understand that we are here because we want to honor her. We want to showcase her work. We want it not to just disappear.”
Rust is in select theaters across the country and on digital on May 2.
