The New York City loft that John Lennon and Yoko Ono bought after the breakup of his band The Beatles is on the market for the first time in 50 years, as it’s being sold for $5.5 million.
Lennon And Ono’s Former Loft Goes On Market
Fox Business reported that the two-story loft-style building is located at 496 Broome Street in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Lennon and Ono bought the home back in 1971, one year after The Beatles broke up. At the time, Lennon was trying to break away from The Beatles image and make a name for himself as a solo artist. He was also trying to create a life of his own with Ono.
Lennon and Ono only lived in the loft until 1973. At the time, the couple was also renting an apartment at 105 Bank St. in the West Village
“The building on Broome Street was sort of like a base for their artistic ventures,” Philip Norman, the author of “John Lennon: The Life,” told the New York Times. “Bank Street was their salon, where people could just walk in.”

Info On The Loft
The Broome Street loft has been used as a workspace over the years. It includes a gallery-like ground-floor space with 14.4-foot. ceilings, an open kitchen, and a bedroom loft in the back. The top floor of the loft features a large live-workspace and recording studio.
The JLL’s Capital Markets Team, who has listed the property, states that it has 4,600 square feet of air rights. They add that current zoning allows for three additional floors to be added, subject to Landmarks approval. This would make a total gross floor area of roughly 7,500 square feet above grade.
Paul Smadbeck is one of the managing directors leading the marketing effort for the property.
“496 Broome St. is both a unique piece of New York history and popular culture and a prime investment opportunity for the right buyer,” he said.
“Versatile zoning and its location in one of the city’s most desirable and trendsetting neighborhoods offers an exciting opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind property,” Smadbeck added.
Lennon And Ono’s Fates
Lennon was tragically murdered as he left his home at the Dakota in New York City on December 8, 1980, according to People Magazine. Mark David Chapman immediately confessed to the murder at the scene. In 2022, he told a parole board that he was a Beatles fan “seeking fame.”
“I knew what I was doing, and I knew it was evil,” he told them. “I knew it was wrong, but I wanted the fame so much that I was willing to give everything and take a human life.”

Meanwhile, Ono is still alive and is 91 years-old. After living in New York City for decades, she finally left the city during the pandemic. She moved to a rural upstate New York farm that she bought with Lennon in 1978.
According to The New York Post, Ono plans to live out the rest of her days on the farm, which is located on 600 acres in the Catskills.
In the 44 years since Lennon’s murder, Ono has never remarried.
