Tom Selleck has been one of the most famous stars in Hollywood for decades.

On the small screen, he’s best known for starring in the television shows Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods. On the big screen he’s starred in hits like Three Men And A Baby and Quigley Down Under.

When Was Selleck Born?

Born in Detroit, Michigan on January, 29, 1945, Selleck moved to southern California with his family at the age of 3. Selleck spent much of his childhood playing sports, and he earned himself a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California.

After college, Selleck became interested in acting. Throughout the 1970s, he supported himself by working as a model and getting small parts in films and television shows.

Selleck’s big break came in 1980, when he was cast as the title character in the hit television series Magnum P.I. The show ran for eight seasons and made Selleck a household name. It also won him one Emmy and one Golden Globe Award.

Selleck’s Family

Selleck was married to model Jacquelyn Ray from 1970 until they divorced in 1982. During their marriage, he adopted her son Kevin Shepard, who was born in 1966. Shepard would go on to play the drums for the American rock band Tonic.

Selleck has been married to the British actress Jilly Joan Mack since 1987. They welcomed their daughter Hannah in 1988, and she’s known as a talented equestrian.

Selleck has lived on a 63-acre ranch in Ventura County, California since the same year his daughter was born. He bought the ranch for $5 million, and he loves the time he spends there.

“I’m a fairly private person,” Selleck told People Magazine in 2020. “And I’ve always treasured the balance between work and time with my family.”

“It’s always about them,” he added. “My relationships and my ranch keep me sane.”

Did Selleck Serve In The Military?

Selleck served in the military from 1967 until 1973. After receiving a draft notice during the Vietnam War, Selleck joined the California National Guard as a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry.

“I am a veteran; I’m proud of it,” he previously said.

“I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era,” he continued. “We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”

Selleck’s Alleged Health Issues

Though Selleck himself has never publicly confirmed any health problems, rumors have swirled for years that he suffers from arthritis. An anonymous source alleged to Radar Online in July of 2023 that Selleck was in “a lot of pain and agony” from arthritis.

“He’s been to doctors and has learned techniques to alleviate the pain, but it’s a disease that isn’t going to go away,” this source said. “He’s learning to adjust to it as best as he can.”

Selleck fired back through his reps to deny this report, however. They claimed that the actor is “fit and vigorous.”

Selleck has also previously admitted to having back issues from years of doing his own stunt work in film and television.

“My back’s kind of messed up,” Selleck previously said. “When you do stunts in movies—I do a lot of them—you’re taking a risk…You just see the price of stunts. They weren’t that hard, but I think it’s the stop-and-go of all that stuff.”

Selleck’s Limp On ‘Blue Bloods’

Since Blue Bloods premiered back in 2010, fans have noticed that Selleck’s character, New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, walks with a limp. This has led to widespread concerns about Selleck’s health, as fans are desperate to know what’s causing the limp.

Selleck has never addressed the limp in any way. He hasn’t revealed if the limp is something that he suffers from himself, or if it was a character choice he made in his portrayal of Reagan. A Blue Bloods source spoke out in 2019 to blame the limp on Selleck’s alleged arthritis, claiming that he is dealing with a “host of medical problems.”

Given how many years Blue Bloods has been on with no explanation of the limp, it’s unlikely that Selleck will address it now.

Selleck’s Net Worth

Selleck reportedly has a net worth of $25 million. This is largely due to the success he’s had in television.

At the peak of Magnum P.I., Selleck was earning $500,000 per episode. When adjusted for inflation, that would be the equivalent of making $1.2 million per episode today.

On his current show Blue Bloods, which has been on since 2010, Selleck makes $200,000 per episode. This works out to about  $4.4 million for an entire normal season.
