Thursday marked the three year anniversary of the Oscars ceremony in which Will Smith infamously slapped the comedian Chris Rock. Now, Smith is addressing this scandal on his newest rap album, Based on a True Story.
People might forget, but “Big Will” actually made some decent tunes back in the day!
Smith Addresses Oscar Slap On New Album
Rock, 60, was presenting at the 2022 Oscars when he made a joke about Chris Rock’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith being bald. This struck a nerve with Smith, 56, as his wife suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss. Smith shocked everyone by walking onstage and slapping Rock across the face. He then returned to his seat and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your [expletive] mouth!”
The first song on Smith’s new album is titled “Int. Barbershop — Day.” In the opening line of the song, a voice can be heard saying “Will Smith is canceled,” likely referring to the fallout from the slap. Another voice can later be heard saying, “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that [expletive] he did.”
Throughout the rest of the song, other voices gossip about Smith.
“Him and Jada both crazy, girl, what you talkin’ bout?” one voice says. “You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”
Later in the song, someone else says, “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back/ And you know they only made him do that s— because he’s black.”

Smith Doubles Down On Second Track
Smith won the 2022 Oscar for Best Actor for his work in King Richard. While he did not in fact have to give his Oscar back, he was banned from any Academy events for the next ten years. He additionally resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the time, Smith claimed that he fully accepted “any and all consequences for my conduct.”
You wouldn’t know that Smith is accepting these “consequences” from his new album, however. Indeed, Smith refers to the Oscars slap fallout once again in his second song “You Lookin’ for Me?” On that track, he raps the lyrics, “Took a lot, I’m back on top/ Y’all gon’ have to get acclimated/ Won’t stop, my [expletive] still hot/ Even though I won’t get nominated.”
Based on a True Story is the first album that Smith has released in 20 years. His last album Lost and Found came out way back in 2005.

Smith Has ‘Been Doing A Very Deep Exploration’
In a teaser video for the album that Smith posted to Instagram on Thursday, he admitted, “The past couple of years, I’ve been doing a very deep exploration of who and what I truly am.”
“The process of this album is really allowing myself to be more honest with myself than I ever have about who and what I actually am,” he continued. “This is about to be the greatest artistic creative period of my entire life.”
Smith slapping Rock will always go down as one of the most infamous Oscar moments of all time. While it’s nice to see Smith reemerging again, it remains to be seen how making music about this slap will go over with the public.
