The Hollywood star Meryl Streep was left visibly stunned by a joke that was made at her expense at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night.

Streep Hit With Joke At Emmys

Streep, 75, was nominated for the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her work in the hit Hulu show Only Murders in the Building. She ended up losing the award to The Bear actress Liza Colón-Zayas, who also beat out the legendary Palm Royale star Carol Burnett.

When the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-stars and real-life married couple Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson came onstage to present the award, they made a crude joke at Streep’s expense.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place,” McElhenney began. “They show crucial support when it’s really needed.”

“What you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap,” Olsen chimed in to add.

“No it doesn’t!” McElhenney continued. “These roles make sure everything stays secure, without this support the whole package falls apart … all right, this does sound like a jockstrap.”

“Are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” Olsen asked.

The camera cut to a visibly stunned Streep as McElhenney stammered, “No! I’m so sorry, Meryl.”

“Oh God,” Streep mouthed.

Fans Respond

Some social media users were not fans of the joke.

“I don’t know who wrote the #EmmyAwards tonight, but the dialog is soooooo cringe,” one user wrote. “They just compared Meryl Streep to a jock strap. Yeah, it’s that bad.”

Others, however, found it to be hilarious.

“Meryl Streep reacting to being called a jockstrap was amazing,” another fan gushed.

Rumors About Streep And Martin Short

During the Emmys, Streep fueled rumors that she is dating her Only Murders In The Building co-star Martin Short. They initially sparked these dating rumors at the Golden Globe Awards back in January. Short, however, tried to shut them down.

“They are just very good friends. Nothing more,” his rep told E! News at the time.

Short doubled down on this in August, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he and Streep are just “friends.” Yet that same month, Short and Streep were seen holding hands at the season four premiere of Only Murders In The Building.

Short And Streep’s History

Short and Streep’s chemistry is electric on the screen. Indeed, their Only Murders In The Building characters got into a romance that began in season three of the show. In real life, Short is a widower. He was married to his wife Nancy Dolman, who is the mother of his three adult children, from 1980 until she died of cancer in 2010.

As for Streep, sources told Page Six in October of last year that she and her husband Don Gummer, who she’s been married to since 1978, had been quietly “separated for more than six years.” They are the parents of four adult children.

Only Murders In The Building was up for 21 Emmys on Sunday night. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out on Hulu!
