The New York City townhouse that was once owned by the late great Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn has been put on the market for $7.2 million.
Hepburn’s Townhouse Goes On The Market
The New York Post reported that Hepburn lived in the home from 1931 until she died in 2003 at the age of 96. Her estate sold the four-bedroom, four-bathroom townhouse the next year for $3.9 million.
Located within Turtle Bay Gardens at 244 E. 49th St., the property, which was built in 1899, measures in at 4,560 square feet.
“The owners purchased the house as a pied a terre and because they have been coming to NYC less frequently, they made the difficult decision to sell,” said Lisa Larson, of Sotheby’s International Realty, who holds the listing.
“It was a tough decision as the renovation and interior design of the house was a labor of love and they have thoroughly enjoyed the house over the years,” she added.

Features Of The Home
The home has five stories and includes six fireplaces, a restored wooden staircase and even Hepburn’s own still-intact mirrored vanity. It also has a 1,000 square foot garden that is located off of the first level. The master bedroom is on the third floor and overlooks this garden.
Other features of the home include a Juliette balcony, a wet bar, a wine cellar, and a rear library.
Turtle Bay Gardens has had many other legendary residents over the years. These famous names include Bob Dylan, E.B. White and Stephen Sondheim, the last of whom’s former 2,690-square-foot former townhouse at 246 East 49th St. sold for $7 million back in December.

Hepburn’s History
Born to a wealthy Connecticut family in 1907, Hepburn fell in love with acting in college. Hepburn launched her film career in 1932, making her film debut for A Bill Of Divorcement.
Hepburn won her first Best Actress Oscar the next year for her work in the 1933 film Morning Glory. She would go on to be nominated for 12 Oscars, winning four of them.
Hepburn would later win again in 1968 for Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner. The very next year, she won for a third time for The Lion In Winter. This was a notable win, as Hepburn actually tied with Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl. It remains the only tie in Oscar history in the Best Actress category.
Hepburn’s final win came in 1982 for On Golden Pond. She only acted sporadically after that. Hepburn’s last onscreen appearance was in the 1994 television movie One Christmas. This ended a screen career that lasted 62 years. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Hepburn as the top American screen legend of all time.

Hepburn’s Personal Life
In her personal life, Hepburn was known to be intensely private. She was married and divorced once, and carried on a decades-long love affair with the actor Spencer Tracy.
Hepburn died on June 29, 2003 of cardiac arrest at the Hepburn family home in Fenwick, Connecticut.
“Life is hard,” she was once quoted as saying. “After all, it kills you.”
While Hepburn is dearly missed, she will always live on through her incredible film roles. Whoever buys her New York City townhouse will be one lucky person!
