The country music star Jelly Roll is admitting that he was “so nervous” at the CMAs last year that he shattered his award.

The singer, who is known for being your average Joe, still gets nervous at star-studded events.

Jelly Roll Broke His Award

In November of 2023, Jelly Roll became one of the oldest people to ever win new artist of the year. Now 39, Jelly Roll admitted to The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon on Monday that he was “so nervous” after his victory that he “fumbled” his glass award.

Fallon played a clip from backstage of the awards show that featured the sound of shattering glass during a live local broadcast.

“Oh goodness, Jelly Roll just broke his award,” WKRN-TV reporter Stephanie Langstoncan can be heard saying in the clip. “Yeah, he’s still standing there. I’m pretty sure it’s his award. He just dropped it on the floor.”

“First of all, when it first dropped, you could’ve heard a mouse pee on cotton,” Jelly Roll told Fallon in response. “I mean, it was dead silent, and right after you could’ve heard a cricket fart, you heard a bunch of people go ‘Aww.’”

Jelly Roll Was ‘So Excited And So Nervous’

Jelly Roll went on to say that both the weight of the award and his sweaty palms played a role in him breaking it.

“I was just so excited and so nervous that I had the sweatiest, shakiest palms,” he confessed. “And that thing is — I’m already not a physically fit man — and that thing’s heavy. That thing was really heavy.

“And I was so excited, and I was going to change it from one hand to the other to shake somebody’s hand, and it just boomed,” he continued. “And I was like — this is the story of my life though, Jimmy. I finally get my life together…I win the biggest award — best new artist — I was one of the oldest people to ever win it. I was 39 years old…I gave a passionate speech, and then I came backstage and fumbled the ball. Just fumbled the ball!”

“No, no, be you. Never stop being you, though,” Fallon responded.

We agree! It’s nice seeing a normal person gain fame and recognition every once in awhile!

Jelly Roll then campaigned for the CMAs to allow him to keep the broken award.

“I was like, ‘I think it fits me great. I’ll just duct tape it together,’” he explained.

However, the shattered award was reportedly just a generic one. Last year, a CMA official said that the award hadn’t been engraved yet because the winners weren’t known beforehand.

Jelly Roll Turned His Life Around

In this same interview, Jelly Roll revealed how he turned his life around after being arrested many times in his youth.

“As cliché as it may sound, [the answer] is faith, finding love,” he said. “It softened my heart. I fell in love with a woman and got married. I had a daughter. It changed my whole life. She’s 16 now, so that’s getting interesting, but it’s still really good.”

“And it just made me want to be a good father and a better human,” he added. “And I knew I was just a crappy person for so long, man. I just destroyed. I was just a bad human, and now I’m trying to turn that around. I’m a totally different guy, man. It’s awesome.”

Jelly Roll continues to be one of the most inspiring people in the country music world. Unlike many celebrities, he has remained down to earth and never forgotten where he comes from. We would like to wish Jelly Roll many years of success to come!
