Back in October, we reported that the three-time Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep was rumored to be dating her Only Murders In The Building co-star Martin Short. Now, it’s seemingly been confirmed that Streep and Short have been dating for “well over a year now.”
A ‘Completely Unexpected’ Romance
A source told Page Six that the romance between Streep, 75, and Short, 74, was “completely unexpected.” Indeed, it totally “took them by surprise.”
“Meryl couldn’t help but fall for Martin,” the insider explained. “He is a gentleman, he keeps her laughing and is an all around positive person. She loves being around him.”
The source went on to say that neither Streep nor Short “were looking for a relationship when they started dating.” The couple’s “friends and family, including their kids, absolutely approve of their relationship and think they’re adorable together.”

Streep And Short’s History
Fans were stunned in October of 2023 when Streep revealed that she’d been separated from her husband Don Gummer for six years. They had been married since 1978 and had four children together. Prior to that, she was engaged to the legendary The Godfather star John Cazale, who tragically died of lung cancer in 1978 at the age of 42.
As for Short, he was married to Nancy Dolman from 1982 until 2010, when she died of ovarian cancer at the age of 58.
“Meryl and Martin have bonded over the loss of their exes,” as they both died of cancer, the insider said.
Despite being very much in love, Streep and Short have no interest in marrying, according to the source.
“Meryl is still legally married to Don but even if she were divorced, that’s just not something that she or Martin are interested in,” the insider stated. “They’re happy dating as boyfriend and girlfriend. They’ve been friends for years and have several mutual friends.”
The source concluded by saying that while Streep and Short had “traveled in the same social circles, they were never really on one another’s radar in terms of a romantic relationship.”

Streep And Short Denied That They Were Dating At First
Streep and Short spent much of last year denying that they were dating. However, many felt that they behaved like a couple when they attended the premiere of the latest season of Only Murders In The Building together last August.
“They walked in holding hands, and were in great spirits, laughing. It was very sweet and cute,” another source told Page Six at the time, adding that Short was “very attentive” with Streep.
“Meryl and Martin denied their romantic involvement months ago,” this insider continued. “They are the worst kept secret of the entire production. No one really asks them anything because they don’t need to.”
At this event, Short couldn’t help but gush over Streep.
‘I think it’s been a friendship that always grows if you work with someone and love that person,” he said.
Streep and Short have each been beloved Hollywood stars for decades. After both of them experienced devastating heartbreak, we’re glad to see that they’ve found love again with one another!
