The Oscar-nominated actor Gary Sinise of Forrest Gump fame has revealed that he bailed on Hollywood back in 2021 and moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee. Sinise made this move after both his wife and son were diagnosed with cancer.

Sinise Left Hollywood For Nashville

“We were in the cancer fight during that time,” Sinise, 69, told Fox News.

“My wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer,” he recalled. “My son was diagnosed with this very rare cancer … within two months of each other….my dad had just had a stroke, and my mom was alone, and I had to … take care of her. … I kind of had my hands full.”

That’s truly unbelievable. The chances of all those things happening at the same time must be astronomical.

Sinise’s wife has thankfully since gone into remission and is now cancer-free. Sadly, Sinise’s son Mac lost his battle with a rare form of cancer called chordoma earlier this year at the age of 33.

“Our son was fighting this cancer with no cure,” Sinise continued as he became emotional. “Trying to find drugs and doctors or anybody that could do anything for him was like a full-time job. Plus, he became more and more disabled by the cancer as time went on. … He needed more and more care.”

Mac Was ‘Happy At The End Of His Life’

Sinise went on to say that while his family has been left devastated by Mac’s death, the young man was “happy at the end of his life.”

“I will say this about Mac and the album that he made last year … he had achieved something that he set out to do, which was to record all this music in May and make a full album of it … that gave me a lot of joy … just watching him kind of enjoy those moments,” he added.

Sinise released his son’s posthumous album “Resurrection & Revival: Part 2” on November 10, which would have been Mac’s 34th birthday.

“This has been a real labor of very deep love,” he explained. “Because a lot of this music, I was not even aware that he had it until I discovered it on … his files.”

Sinise Celebrates Veterans Day

Sinise has also continued his work tirelessly helping veterans through his Gary Sinise Foundation. On Veteran’s Day on Monday, the foundation gave an adapted home to the retired US Army Sergeant Joshua Hargis, who lost both of his legs while serving in Afghanistan back in 2013.

“We provide specially adapted, smart technology, mortgage-free housing,” Sinise said. “Our team takes care of that, makes it specially designed for the needs of each individual.”

Joshua could not have been more touched to receive this home.

“Being able to be here to receive this on Veterans Day is, it’s the greatest gift I could ever ask for,” he said.

Incredibly, this is the 94th home that the Gary Sinise Foundation has gifted to a veteran!

“It means a lot to be able to reach out to someone who’s sacrificed a lot for their country and given a lot and is going through physical challenges,” Sinise said. “I’m a grateful American, and I want them to know it.”

Sinise is a rarity in the entertainment world in that he is a true class act who goes above and beyond to help others. If only we had more stars in Hollywood like him!
