Earlier this month, we reported that fan-favorite Carrie Underwood will be replacing Katy Perry as a judge on the next season of American Idol. This had fans very excited, especially since Underwood is American Idol royalty, being the winner of season four back in 2005.
Now, Underwood is opening up about how she will approach being on the other side of the table, judging the contestants.
Underwood’s Three Judging Traits
“I think I can be honest and constructive, but still kind,” said Underwood, 41, on SiriusXM’s Music Row Happy Hour inside Resorts World Las Vegas. “I think that’s the whole point ’cause people are coming in, and you know … it’s dreams.”
“You’re a part of somebody’s story from that moment on,” she continued. “I think it’s important to be honest, but I think it’s also very important to be kind. Hopefully, I can marry all of those together.”
If anyone knows, it’s definitely Carrie Underwood!
American Idol changed Underwood’s life forever. Indeed, since winning season four of the show, she has become one of the biggest country music stars of all time. In her new interview, Underwood reflected on it being 20 years since she auditioned for the reality television singing show.
“Twenty years… since I auditioned, in August, ya, so here we are,” she said.

Underwood Excited To Judge With Luke Bryan
Underwood went on to say that it is “kind of a win” to have two country artists on the judging panel, now that she will share the responsibilities with Luke Bryan.
“That’s right,” she stated. “Well, I feel like I’ve been very blessed to obviously be so rooted in country music, but I’ve been able to be part of many other genres of music as well.”
“I mean, I’ve got a song with Papa Roach right now,” Underwood continued. “It’s a lot of fun. I like to think that I’m versatile, and hopefully when I listen to people come in and audition I can have any lens I need to put on as far as what kind of music I’m thinking.”
A bit of history for those who don’t remember: Papa Roach was all the rage in the late 90s and early 2000s “nu metal” scene. They’re best known for their hit, “Last Resort.” As you can see, Carrie certainly isn’t lying about branching out into other genres!
Underwood and Bryan are joined by the legendary Lionel Richie as the third judge.

Katy Perry Supports Underwood
This comes after it was announced that Underwood would be replacing Katy Perry, who had been a judge on American Idol for seven seasons. Perry decided to leave the show so that she can focus on her music career. Going into the next season, Underwood has Perry’s full support.
“It’s going to be great,” Perry told the American Idol host Ryan Seacrest earlier this month. “It’s a homecoming for Carrie, it’s a perfect match. I wouldn’t have picked actually anyone else.”
“They made the right decision; I think everyone’s going to be so excited,” she added. “Especially, the big fans of American Idol that have been along the journey.”
Perry’s newest album is set to drop on September 20th.
As a former winner, Underwood appears to be the perfect fit as a judge for American Idol. We can’t wait to see how she does as a judge when season 23 of American Idol premieres in 2025!
