The Hollywood star Angelina Jolie broke down in tears as her Maria Callas biopic Maria received a standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival in Italy on Thursday.

Jolie Breaks Down In Tears

Jolie, 49, was seen wiping away tears as the audience at Sala Grande stood up to applaud her. At one point, she even covered her mouth with her hand.

As the crowd continued to clap for her, Jolie was escorted down the stairs by the Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín, 48.

Jolie’s Prep For Callas Role

Before the screening, Jolie revealed in a press conference that she spent around seven months preparing for the demanding role of the real life opera singer Maria Callas. The Oscar-winning star worked with opera singers and coaches to master the correct posture, breathing, and movement techniques of Callas.

Jolie said that immersing herself in the world of opera provided “therapy I didn’t know I needed.”

“I had no idea how much I was holding in and not letting out,” she said. “So the challenge wasn’t the technical, it was an emotional experience to find my voice, to be in my body, to express. You have to give every single part of yourself.”

Jolie also said that the aspect of Callas that she related to most was “the part of her that’s extremely soft and doesn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was — as emotionally open as she truly was. I share her vulnerability more than anything.”

While maybe not surprising, it is interesting that her revelations come at a time of tension between herself and Brad Pitt.

Jolie’s Musical Tastes

In her younger days, Jolie’s musical tastes were a bit different than opera.

“I was more of a punk and I loved all music but I probably listened to The Clash more than most,” she explained. “As I have gotten older I have listened to classical music and opera. I think I still love the music I did when I was younger, I would still listen to The Clash.”

“But I think when you have felt a certain level of despair, of pain, of love at a certain point there are only certain sounds that can match that feeling and to me the immensity of the feeling encapsulated in the sounds of opera – there is nothing like it,” she continued. “That feeling that would move all of us if we were to hear it would be the only sound that would explain that pain, so I have leant more towards it now.”

Jolie’s Divorce Battle With Brad Pitt

This comes as Jolie continues to be embroiled in a bitter divorce battle with her fellow Hollywood star Brad Pitt. She filed for divorce in 2016 after the couple allegedly got into a physical altercation on a private plane.

Though they were each declared legally single in 2019, their legal divorce war continues to this day. One of the main points of contention is custody of their six children. Pitt is also at the Venice Film Festival for his new movie Wolfs, which he stars in with his close friend George Clooney.

This is clearly a very emotional time for Jolie. If you’re a fan of hers, be sure to check out Maria when it hits theaters later this year!
