Hollywood star and singer Bette Midler gave an emotional new interview this week. In it, she revealed the “greatest thing” that she’s done in her life.
‘The Peak Of My Life’
Of all the things that she’s done in her life, it’s her starring role in the 2017 Broadway revival of “Hello Dolly!” that Midler is most proud of. She won a Tony Award for best actress in a musical for her work in the show.
Which is a little surprising, considering how recent the show was. Midler has been in showbiz for decades!
“I must say the last one, ‘Hello Dolly!’— a dream come true,” Midler told TODAY.
“That was the peak of my life,” she added. “I really do think that was the greatest thing I ever did. Those people who had followed me all these years screaming for Dolly. It was overwhelming.”
Midler is also proud of her breakout film role in the 1979 movie The Rose. She earned her first of two Oscar nominations for Best Actress for that movie, though she lost the award to Sally Field for Norma Rae.
“The Rose, which was absolutely a pivotal point in my life, it was a peak,” she said. “What I didn’t know was that many, many peaks would come after that.”
Throughout her career, Midler has won three Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, and two Academy Award nominations.
“I never said I’m going to try this. I said I’m going to do this,” she explained. “For me, there was nothing else. I couldn’t do anything else. This is what I could do, and I loved it with all my heart. I was going to do it.”

Midler Gets Emotional
The interview took an emotional turn when Midler talked about her father. He had not been a fan of her entering the crazy world of show business, but he came around before he died.
“My dad was a problem. My dad never liked any of it, and he was a working-class guy. I loved him with all my heart, and in the end he wrote me a note, and please don’t make me cry. He wrote me a really nice note,” she said as she became visibly emotional.
“It answered everything,” she continued. “In a funny way his passing released me from the cynicism that he put on me, and that was a good thing because one wants to be joyful in this life.”
Midler is starring in the new movie The Fabulous Four, which hits theaters on July 26. She is joined in this movie by Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Midler’s Family
When she isn’t acting, Midler is focused on spending time with her husband of 40 years, Martin von Haselberg. She also has their daughter Sophie, who appears in her new movie.
“I have my family, and I brought my family much closer,” Midler concluded. “I love the crowds, but I don’t need them anymore.”
