The legendary rocker Neil Young and his band Crazy Horse have announced that they are taking an “unplanned break” from his “Love Earth” tour due to unexpected illness.

Young is 78-years-old.

Young Cancels Tour

“The Love Earth Tour has been a great experience for us so far,” Young, 78, said in a statement posted to his website. “GREAT AUDIENCES AND MUSIC. WE HAVE HAD A BLAST!”

“When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to stop,” he added. Young went on to say that they “are still not fully recovered, so sadly our great tour will have a big unplanned break. We will try to play some of the dates we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again!”

“We know many of you made travel plans and we apologize for the inconvenience,” Young continued. “Thanks for your understanding and patience. Health is # 1.”

The statement concluded with another message directly to the fans.

“We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you…. and for us,” Young stated. “With love and thanks to all of you from Crazy Horse….. Neil, Micah, Ralph and Billy Love Earth.”

The current lineup of Love Earth is Young, bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina and guitarist Micah Nelson. Talbot and Molina have been with the band since 1968, while Nelson joined in 2023.

One of the performances that has been cancelled was set to take place at the 2024 Ohana Festival in September.

“We are sad to announce that Neil Young with Crazy Horse will no longer be performing at Ohana Festival 2024,” the festival said in a statement, according to Variety. “Please stay tuned for a lineup update coming as soon as possible; in the meantime, we are wishing the band a speedy recovery.”

Young had also been set to headline the Bourbon and Beyond festival in September.

This comes the same day that Young and Crazy Horse are releasing Early Daze, a collection of recordings done by the band in 1969.

Early Daze showcases the band’s unique style at the end of the 1960s, capturing the essence of their live performances and their contribution to the evolution of rock & roll,” Young’s website states.

Young’s Previous Health Issues

Young has battled various health issues over the years. He has been open about suffering from arthritis. This has caused Young to adopt a new playing style with his guitar.

“I had been playing with arthritis in my hand for years and years and finally discovered a way around the pain with no drugs that let me play as I felt,” he previously said.

When he was 54, Young got a “weird thing in [my] eye, like a piece of broken glass.” After getting an MRI, Young was told that he had a brain aneurysm. He immediately underwent surgery that was successful. Just a few days later, however, Young said that he “made it half a block, and the thing burst on the street, and there was blood in my shoe and let’s just say there was a complication.”

Young fell unconscious and was rushed to the hospital with major blood loss. Doctors were able to treat him and recommended that he give up marijuana for his health. Young immediately did, and he hasn’t had an issue like this one in the decades since.

Young and his band love to perform, so it’s disheartening to see them cancel all of their summer shows. Please join us in saying a prayer for them as they fight for their health!
