Hollywood star Julie Andrews of Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music fame is known for being something of a prim and proper figure. That’s why it came as a huge surprise to fans last week when she told a bawdy story about herself that also involved the legendary comedian Carol Burnett and a former First Lady of the United States!

Julie Andrews’ Hilarious Carol Burnett Story

Andrews appeared on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” last week to promote her new memoir “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years.”

While on the show, Andrews told a story about attending a benefit with Burnett in the 1960s.

The two women were waiting for a third friend of theirs named Mike to arrive at the event. They decided to wait for him right by the elevators.

Andrews, 85, recalled:

“It was Lyndon Johnson’s inaugural, so the hotel was pretty packed, but at that hour it was quite quiet. We decided to sit on a sofa in front of the elevators and wait for Mike. I swear I don’t remember which one of us decided that we would do something silly when Mike got out of the elevator. So one of us said, ‘Let’s be kissing or something.'”

Julie Andrews And Carol Burnett Get Into ‘A Big Embrace’

She added that she and Burnett then got into “a big embrace” aka a kiss, when they heard the elevator arrive.

But they soon learned it was “simply packed with Secret Service men.” Mike was nowhere to be seen.

Another elevator soon arrived without Mike on it either. But, the woman who stepped out looked quite familiar to Andrews and Burnett.

“Eventually, a lady got out — Carol swears it was Lady Bird Johnson — the lady went down the hall, realized it might be us, and she came back,” Andrews remembered.

“By this time Carol was laughing so hard that she went around the back of the sofa we were sitting on because we both had tears running down our faces at being so silly,” she continued as she started to laugh.

“And the lady came and looked over the back of the sofa and said, ‘Excuse me, are you Carol Burnett?’ Immediately Carol said, ‘Yes, and this is my friend Mary Poppins.'”

It’s Fun That These Two Icons Are Good Friends

Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett were both already close to achieving icon status in the 1960s, so it’s not too surprising to find out that the two of them have been close friends for decades!

It’s nice to see that they seem to have just as much fun together offscreen as the rest of us have when we watch them perform.
