If you wanted a longer WrestleMania, it certainly appears as though you will be getting what you wished for. WrestleNewz covered a report from Forbes that indicates we are about to get a WrestleMania that apparently will feature seventeen matches. 17!
One of them may or may not be Kofi Kingston versus Daniel Bryan. Fans thought this was confirmed when Kingston ran the announced gauntlet-only to have Mr. McMahon add Daniel Bryan to the mix. Kingston lost, leaving the WWE Championship match in limbo for now.
While we all assume to get to that pairing, I want to lobby for a stipulation we don’t see much of. The 60 minute Iron Man match.
60 minute Iron Man Match
The last time I remember it in WWE at involved the women in a thirty minute Iron Woman match (keep in mind, this is just off the top of my head). The most memorable one WWE put out, and one of my all time favorite WrestleMania matches, was the Iron Man match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.
No, I am not saying that Kingston and Bryan are on that level…but could they be? We’ve already seen Kofi last incredibly long in several recent matches. Daniel Bryan has done this too. As much as WWE seems to enjoy torturing Kofi, and by extension the fans, what better way to do this than by having him presumably win the championship in an Iron Man match?
You could even clone that 60+ minute classic and make it need overtime…but to be honest, that would require some character changes. Mr. McMahon is very definitely trending heel. There can be no doubt that Shane is too. Stephanie does seem to possibly straddle the fence here a little bit. Ultimately, it is hard to envision a McMahon coming down, should the match end in a draw, and declaring sudden death overtime. It could happen, it would just be a rather interesting journey to get there.
That said, the match does not HAVE to go to overtime to work. The odds will undoubtedly be stacked against Kofi throughout, but perhaps he scores a decisive pin with under a minute remaining.
An Engaging Card
Here’s another way I can spin this: of all the matches WWE has announced or will be announcing, I somehow find this to be the most engaging on the card. We all expect Seth Rollins to win and for Brock Lesnar to go off to UFC again. It appears destined for Becky Lynch to be victorious and for Ronda Rousey to take her ball and go home, if only for a while. When it comes to this match, however, there seems to be uncertainty-and I don’t just mean the fact that they’ve yet to book it. I think a lot of us are wondering if WWE could actually put the World Championship on Kofi-something I doubt most of us would have thought was possible even a few months ago. I expect I am not alone in being captivated by this program. What better way to make it a prominent match than by giving it an hour to run. It would not need to be the main event, but give it a prominent chunk of show time and let these two amaze us.
WWE wants a longer and longer WrestleMania, which is a whole different topic to dissect. But if they are insisting on getting there, and are eyeing 400 minutes of total action, then a 60 minute Iron Man match absolutely deserves to be in consideration.
